Shelby Knox, Guest speaker
Shelby had taken a pledge of abstinence until marriage. At age 15, she
saw that abstinence-only sex education was not working for her peers,
and she began to conduct "man on the street" interviews about sex. Her
purpose: to highlight the paradox of "abstinence only" sex education in
her high school and the school's high rate of teen pregnancy and STDs.
Shelby’s determination took her from the principal’s office to the U.S.
House of Representatives. The young activist became the subject of a
documentary, The Education of Shelby Knox, which led to appearances on
The Today Show, Good Morning America, and the Dr. Phil Show.
WHY: In recognition of the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
Proceeds benefit the prevention programs of Planned Parenthood, which
provide low cost and confidential medical services, comprehensive
sexuality education, and resources to enable individuals to make
responsible decisions regarding their reproductive health. Last year,
our prevention programs reached more than 45,000 youth, youth
educators, and patients with messages of responsible decision making,
prevention and safety.
